About the Club
Club History
The Zymurnauts Homebrew Club started out as a small group of home brewers from the same organization sharing their latest concoctions. Initially they would bring these handcrafted brews to various Holiday parties and impromptu tastings. As the word spread about people creating these delightful homebrews and sharing the secrets of their success, other home brewers from across the Center attended and participated.
After a few years the numbers and interest grew until enough people asked about creating a homebrew club like the many other employee sponsored clubs on Center. All of these employee clubs are hobby focused for the benefit of the workforce. The club’s founder, Scott Glubke, worked with the GEWA Council in 2004 to define the constitution and by-laws for the club. The GEWA Council approved the club in April, 2004. Our Homebrew Club’s primary mission is to promote the art and science of home brewing, offer technical assistance, skills, and experience to our members (we like a good homebrew).
The name of the club is the combination of the words “zymurgy” and “astronauts.” Zymurgy or zymology is the scientific study of fermentation. The word was originally used to describe the science involved in these processes but it has since become more broadly used to describe the brewing of alcoholic beverages. Most of the members of the club are engineers or scientists working on some space mission like the more notable astronauts of the International Space Station.
